“Ghost in the Shell,” $60 million loss. Nobody really cared about “Ghost in the Shell.” Despite the presence of Scarlett Johansson in a leading role, the biggest press the movie got were accusations of whitewashing the original story.

Deadline reported after the movie’s poor opening in theaters that it was set to lose at least $60 million for investors. Made for $110 million, “Shell” took home just over $40 million from America and had a worldwide total of under $190 million. For perspective, studios usually only keep half of a film’s box office (and worldwide grosses are complicated by various deals); and that $110 million budget doesn’t include the marketing campaign for the movie, which sometimes more than doubles a production budget.
