Super Bowl LI won’t just be about football and expensive ads. For the ninth year in a row, the Super Bowl Live Auction will offer up valuable football memorabilia to help raise money for philanthropic causes.

This year’s items come mainly courtesy of former football player Brett Favre. Hunt Auctions and NFL Auction will host the event on Feb. 4 at NFL Experience Driven by Genesis, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. The event will begin at 11 a.m. CT.

The most valuable item being auctioned off is likely the original Notre Dame football helmet and jersey worn by Rudy Ruettiger in a historic 1975 game.

“This year’s event promises to be an exceptional auction highlighted by an incredible grouping of items from the personal collection of Brett Favre. We applaud the charitable work that Favre 4 Hope and NFL Auction conduct and are humbled to be a small part of that process,” said David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, as Houston Patch reported.

Brett Favre, the beloved Green Bay Packers quarterback, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year. He also has a charity, Favre 4 Hope Foundation, that has raised over $7 million for charities to help disabled and disadvantaged children in the Mississippi and Wisconsin areas, as well to provide financial aid for breast cancer treatment. The Favre 4 Hope Foundation will be one of the charities to benefit from the auction.

“The memories that I have during my football career, especially involving the fans of the Green Bay Packers, are priceless to me,” said Favre, as Houston Patch noted. “While my family and I are blessed to have many items from my career to keep and cherish, I am very happy to share some of my memorabilia with the fans who have been so supportive all these many years.”

The most valuable item being auctioned off is the original Notre Dame football helmet and jersey worn by Rudy Ruettiger in a historic 1975 game. Ruettiger is known to many fans as simply “Rudy,” thanks to the famous 1993 film that chronicled the football player’s unconventional and amazing rise to success.

After he was given a few minutes of perceived charity play in a game during his senior season, Ruettiger stunned everyone when he sacked the opposing team’s quarterback. Players carried him off the field in celebration — an iconic image from the still-popular film starring Sean Astin.

The “Rudy” items are already predicted to raise over six figures.

“We are privileged to have been selected by Rudy and his team at Strategic Sports Management to present these two sports items of national significance, with the succinct hope they may bring further inspiration and awareness to the possibilities afforded through effort and never giving up,” said Hunt.

“The feeling I had that day on the field as well as the experiences and blessings it has brought to me and my family simply cannot be qualified,” said Ruettiger, who today is a motivational speaker.

The “Rudy” items are already predicted to raise over six figures at the auction. Also available will be items from the personal collections of inaugural NFL President Joseph Carr and Van Miller, the broadcaster for the Buffalo Bills for 40 years.

At a time when pop culture seems so divisive and combative — it’s hugely hopeful to see Favre, the Super Bowl and Hunt Auctions focus some of their efforts on charity and on spreading the inspirational stories of people like Rudy Ruettiger.
