Americans of every generation have reason to celebrate — Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, will protect the family should he be confirmed by the Senate and sworn in as the newest justice of the High Court. He has been called an “originalist,” a “textualist,” and a “constitutionalist” — meaning he’ll determine the merits of laws based only on the wording of the law itself.

The intent of the law will not be a factor in his determinations, as intent can change when the law is applied by different elected officials. He does not believe in creating rights or justifying laws that are not specifically referenced in our beautifully historic document.

While the Founding Fathers wanted to protect the individual, the Bill of Rights applies also to the family of every individual.

The First Amendment is key to allowing the family to freely practice the religion of its choice and speak out against laws or actions by the government that a family feels are wrong. Gorsuch voted with a majority of the 10th Circuit in favor of privately held for-profit secular corporations that raised religious objections to being forced to pay for contraception for women covered under their health plans. Even though the Hobby Lobby court case (in 2014) protected religious liberty centered around a corporation, the ruling showed that Gorsuch has a strong stance on religious freedom.

The Second Amendment is crucial in allowing a family to defend itself. Gorsuch wrote, “There is a long tradition of widespread gun ownership by private individuals in this country.” He also stated, “The Second Amendment protects the individual’s right to own firearms and may not be infringed lightly.”

The Third Amendment protects the family household from intrusion of the government and its agents.

The Fourth Amendment protects families from illegal search and seizure.

The Fifth Amendment prevents people from having to testify against themselves (pleading “the Fifth”).

If the Senate really cares about American families, Gorsuch should be confirmed quickly. Opposition to him is opposition to the foundation of our country — the family.

Given that determining the constitutionality of laws is the primary function of the Supreme Court, having an originalist seated on the bench to potentially cast a deciding vote is of the utmost importance to all American families.

Time and again during the presidential election of 2016, then-candidate Donald J. Trump let us know that he is a family man. He has raised his children to be respectful, driven and focused. This nomination by him proves that the American family is one of his greatest concerns.
