What a night! While some are cheering and others jeering, the outcome of the presidential election in the Unites States is a qualified victory for the unborn.

However, the occupant of the Oval Office does not change the primary focus and ground game of the pro-life cause: changing hearts and minds to make abortion unthinkable, and providing support for mothers who choose life.

“The days of public funding of Planned Parenthood are over when the Trump-Pence administration arrives.”

It is an understatement to say that this election season has been divisive for the nation — and for pro-life activists as well. But what happens now? How will having a professed pro-life president make our job easier?

Lauren Muzyka is an attorney and executive director of Sidewalk Advocates for Life, an organization based in Allen, Texas. It trains advocates to reach out to mothers who are considering abortion and connect them to support, helping them continue their pregnancies.

She is also steeped in the political side of our cause and offered her own take on the outcome of this historic election. “Governor Pence has said, ‘Let me assure you, the Trump-Pence administration will stand for sanctity of life and defend the unborn from the first day we take office.’ [Trump] has pledged to defund Planned Parenthood as long as they [continue to] do abortions … and guess what? You cannot separate Planned Parenthood and abortion, so that’s a done deal.”

I agree that based on the campaign promises made by both Trump and Pence, defunding Planned Parenthood is something we can count on.

And of course, most importantly, Trump has promised to appoint solid constitutional conservatives to the Supreme Court of the United States and all federal courts.

The list of judges Trump is considering for the Supreme Court was compiled after consultation with The Heritage Foundation. These judges can be counted on to apply the law and not legislate from the bench. Their influence reaches well beyond a four-year presidential term — potentially for generations.

Our vocal pro-life friends who pledged to never support Trump (for whatever reason) may now find themselves among folks chattering “I told you so.” I beg you not to be among that gloating chorus. We are all on the same side — the right side. While some among us may be nursing a bruised ego, we all share the same sacred goal. Don’t be the “I told you so.” Instead, be the “let’s get back to work” friend!

We are created in the image and likeness of God and are called to establish a sustainable Culture of Life, where every individual is respected, cherished, and legally protected from conception to natural death.

While we can take some comfort that Trump has won the race, we need to keep the pressure on to ensure that he will make good on his pro-life (and pro-religious freedom) campaign promises. It’s not over yet.

“The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”

We will continue to pursue multiple avenues to promote our sacred cause of respect for the inherent sanctity of life: electing pro-life politicians, drafting pro-life legislation, advocating for life through direct intervention and sidewalk counseling at the abortion facilities, providing material support to mothers and families through pregnancy resource centers and maternity shelters, encouraging adoption options and supporting birth parents before and after placement, and supporting mothers and fathers and families through the pregnancy and beyond.

On the surface, having a President Trump in the White House may seem to make our jobs easier, but as Pope Benedict XVI famously said, “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” Let’s not settle for easy, but strive for greatness.

A Trump victory is surely a profoundly historic moment for the pro-life movement. Having a Republican president and both a Republican-controlled House and Senate is a resounding victory, but every day thousands of mothers still face lies from the abortion industry and pressure from peers, parents, bosses, boyfriends, and husbands to have an abortion.

Many will succumb and choose death. We need to be there to support these misguided mothers, fathers, and families and show them another way. We need to be there for those wounded by past abortions, involvement in the abortion decision of another, or direct participation in the abortion industry. We need to be there for them today, tomorrow, and in the future — on a human level. Our race is not a sprint, it’s a marathon.

I am ready to keep running. Are you?
