Giving Back to a Hero

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:19-20)

There is no doubt that faith in numbers brings a special kind of grace and power.

“Students were in the middle of class, some taking quizzes and tests. They dropped everything for a bigger lesson on life, love, community, compassion.”

In a video going viral on Facebook, hundreds of high school students gathered outside their beloved teacher Ben Ellis’s home. Ellis is afflicted with cancer, but these students made sure he did not suffer alone. The high schoolers from the Nashville area high school gathered and prayed for their teacher — even catching the attention of a country music star.

Tim McGraw shared the heartfelt video with a short note.

“A friend sent this to me today,” McGraw wrote in his post. “Ben Ellis is a Nashville area high school teacher battling cancer. The entire student body (400+ students plus HS faculty) drove to his house to worship with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family … So precious and kind.”

The video currently has over 15.5 million views — clearly it’s touched the hearts of many.

One of the most “liked” comments on the video is from Leslie Ponder, another teacher at the school.

“I am a teacher at this school and blessed to call Ben a friend. The school is Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville. This was a spur of the moment decision to go … Students were in the middle of class … some taking quizzes and tests … and dropped everything for a bigger lesson on life, love, community, compassion. Being the hands and feet of Christ is very evident in this video … both from those looking down from the window and those looking up at the window…” wrote Ponder.
