New technology, rapidly changing family dynamics, and an evolving education system all challenge parents today — more so than in previous generations.

These head-spinning changes mean that families can and should rely even more on Scripture throughout their days to help respond in a positive fashion to the challenges facing all Americans. But it doesn’t just “happen” — it requires planning, thought, and consistency.

Parents must counteract a world of negativity and confusion.

Larry Clayton, professor emeritus of history at the University of Alabama and author of the book, “Work and Wealth in Scripture: How to Grow, Prosper, and Work as a Christian,” said the issues facing parents today are not going to be solved by going along with the status quo. Focusing on the practice of faith can make people better parents — and help parents raise better kids.

Taking the time to grow as a family in faith can renew and revitalize parents as Christians, said the author. LifeZette spoke to him for insight.

Question: When raising their children today, are parents focusing on faith enough, in your view?
Answer: No! Parents are more focused on their personal goals. They seek worldly pleasures and don’t apply the reliable Word of God to their daily lives. They may talk the talk, but they don’t walk the walk. The question is, how can they persuade their children to live faithfully? Kids often consider their parents as examples, even if they deny it. The powerful message of faith should be taught and practiced by parents to then translate into the lives of their children.

Q: How does faith help people become better parents?
A: Parents need to look inward and develop their own faith better — that way, they set the example for their children to internalize faith. The Word of God says a lot about how to raise children, but the application of His Word is crucial. More than anything, parents lead by example. Children don’t only hear what they say — they see what they do.

Q: Is this about parents working harder on the effort? Do they have to consciously change their approach?
A: It’s not a matter of work as much as it is a lifestyle of consistency and discipline. The work comes with guiding the mind, body, and soul to seek union with God and to put His Word first. That is what equips parents to face the greater world of negativity and confusion.

All of God’s children have their own unique plan — but they need their parents to instill a foundation of faith.

Practice comes from renewing the mind on a daily basis with the Scriptures. Knowledge is a parent’s responsibility. The Holy Spirit provides revelation and understanding through God’s Word — and God gives parents or anyone the wisdom to carry it out in day-to-day life.

Q: The challenges of raising a family today are tremendous — how can scriptural truths help?
A: It’s even more important today than ever. Christianity is slowly eroding in America. Look at European countries. In Great Britain, only about 5 to 10 percent of the population believes and attends church. Raising a family today is the key to restoring our relationship with God and teaching our families about faith. It is never too late. Parents need to get get acquainted or reacquainted with the Old Testament. God never gave up on his chosen people, but he dealt with them justly — individually and collectively — when they strayed from the path of righteousness. Parents have a responsibility to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Q: How does faith revitalize people as Christians and as members of a family?
A: To teach faith to family members, one has to practice faith. We must practice what you preach. To be faithful, read and learn the scriptures. As people grow and get revitalized each day, so will their families. Keep in mind that everyone moves at their own pace.

All of God’s children have their own unique plan. But children still need their parents to instill a foundation of faith in their everyday lives.
