Hello Kitty has become the newest casualty of the Left’s assault on Christmas.

Catherine Gordon, a high school math teacher in Bangor, Maine, was forced to remove a Christmas tree from her classroom after the principal deemed it inappropriate.

“I am very sad,” Gordon lamented in a note on Facebook. “After 30 years of decorating my classroom for the holidays, I was told today by the building principal that I could no longer put up my little pink tree and to take it down.”

Even though Ms. Gordon had stripped the tree of religious symbols and replaced them with innocuous Hello Kitty decorations, such freedom of expression was found to be unacceptable by the liberal speech police.

“When I first started teaching, we had parties the last day of school before vacation and the kids would bring in cookies and we played holiday music — none of that is allowed now. I feel that this is definitely a turning point in our society — when everything offends everyone all the time. It just sucks the joy out of everything,” she said.

In an interview with local press, Gordon said that for the past 10 years she had been caving to pressure from the school district to be more “inclusive” of other cultures, and she has been omitting religious ornaments from the tree.

But in the eyes of liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and the Maine People’s Alliance, which draws funding from the likes of billionaire George Soros and Sean Eldridge — a pro-homosexual activist who is “married” to Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes — even adorning a tree with a fictional children’s cartoon character violates their dearly held secular belief system, especially its tenet of separation of church and state.

In justifying its decision, the school district highlighted its goal of educating students to become “global citizens,” a euphemism for white-washing society of “hateful” regional traditions like the Christmas celebration.

“In alignment with national and state standards, the Bangor School Department educates students about culture, traditions, and holidays through curriculum ties,” said Betsy Webb, superintendent of the Bangor school district, in a statement to the media.

But David Nealley, a member of the Bangor city council, disagrees. “I do think it’s absolutely ridiculous. They need to pay attention to the fact that the ACLU will never enjoy Christmas like the rest of us,” he told LifeZette. Nealley highlighted how liberal groups have been preying on Maine for years as a testing ground for radical leftist policies like marijuana legalization, minimum wage increases, silencing free speech and undermining Western traditions like Christmas.

Perhaps some on the Left would be more comfortable in Brunei, a tiny oil-rich dictatorship in Southeast Asia that has implemented Sharia Law. The Sultanate has entirely banned public celebrations of Christmas, including the wearing of Santa hats and the sending of festive greetings. Anyone seen celebrating Christmas or organizing a celebration faces up to five years in jail.

“These enforcement measures are … intended to control the act of celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the aqidah (beliefs) of the Muslim community,” Brunei’s Ministry of Religious Affairs said in a statement.

Meanwhile, back in bucolic Bangor, other local officials are expressing disbelief over the school district’s crackdown. “I find the School Department’s decision baseless and completely counter to all that our Nation stands for,” said Congressman Bruce Poliquin, who represents Bangor, in a statement.

Nealley said he would do everything in his power to convince the school board to reverse the decision and facilitate legal defense for Gordon if the need arose. However, he expressed concern that a dangerous precedent had been established and that turmoil will commence if the PC police are not reigned in.

“What I’m afraid of is political correctness run amok,” he said. “We’re being told in our culture today about being more tolerant and being more respectful of others. That’s fine, but what about these same folks being tolerant of our beliefs? If someone is wearing a Christmas tie or a Christmas sweater in the public school system, do they need to go home and change? Where do you draw the line on this stuff?”
