On This Day… September 7, 1813

The United States of America was nicknamed Uncle Sam, inspired by Samuel Wilson (1766-1854), who wrote “U.S.” on barrels of beef that he shipped to the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. In September 1961, Congress recognized Wilson as “the progenitor of America’s national symbol of Uncle Sam.”
