On This Day… Oct. 4, 1965

Pope Paul VI came to New York as the first reigning pope to visit the U.S. In less than 14 hours, he visited with Cardinal Francis Spellman, met with President Lyndon B. Johnson, celebrated Mass in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and gave an address about peace to the General Assembly of the United Nations.
