On This Day… August 10, 1793

The Grand Louvre publicly opened as a museum in Paris, France, which had been suggested by French philosopher Denis Diderot. Today, the Louvre — the world’s biggest museum — is home to some of the richest collections in the world and last year received some 9 million visitors.
