The Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan at 8:40 p.m. Saturday night — at 23rd and 6th — experienced a loud blast and explosion, Fox News, CNN and other sources reported. Twenty-nine or more people are said to be hurt, though none of these apparently are life-threatening. That number was raised after preliminary reports last night indicated 25 people had been hurt.

Ambulances were seen taking at least three people from the scene, Reuters reported, which also said a car driving through the area had its windows blown out. The lower windows of a 14-story brownstone residence for the blind were also blown out, the New York Post reported. Twenty-nine people were hurt and several buildings in the area were evacuated.

The explosion went off inside a Dumpster. Witnesses described the explosion as “deafening” and “ear-splitting.”

New York law enforcement authorities are investigating the incident, along with bomb squad personnel. They found a second device not far away from the original one; the second one had not gone off. The New York City Police Department issued a bulletin advising motorists in the area to “expect extensive traffic delays and emergency personnel in the area of 23rd Street and 7th Avenue” due to police activity there and asked the public to avoid the area, Reuters reported.

Hundreds of people ran down the block as police sealed off the area to investigate.

The incident occurred on the same day that a similar explosion occurred in Seaside Park, a popular New Jersey shore town. Three pipe bombs had been tossed into a plastic garbage can, but only one detonated, at 9:35 a.m., the New York Post reported.
