One of the more surprising moments to come out of Sunday night’s Emmy Awards broadcast was a cameo from former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

While it might seem like a positive step for liberal Hollywood to give a Trump supporter the stage — it was not. Spicer showed up and played right into the hands of the Trump-bashing celebrities who invited him.

After saying he hoped the night scored big ratings and a large audience, host Stephen Colbert brought out Spicer as a joke to confirm the large crowd size. Spicer wheeled out a podium and said, “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period. Both in person and around the world.”

The line was a callback to a headline-making press conference where Spicer had said Trump’s inauguration had the largest audience in history “both in person and around the globe.”

It was easy to see many of the celebrities looking embarrassed for Spicer, including Melissa McCarthy — who has impersonated the former press secretary on “Saturday Night Live.”

Colbert proved himself to be an ungracious host as well. Despite Spicer’s showing up and being willing to mock himself, Colbert just used him as a punching bag the rest of the night.

“I can understand why [Trump] would want one of these guys around,” Colbert said before Spicer exited the stage.

After Spicer left, Colbert joked that the HBO movie “Wizard of Lies,” which was about the infamous fraudster Bernie Madoff, may have actually been about Spicer.

It would be easy to see how Spicer might come to regret his decision to show up at the Emmys. He put out his hand and made a peace offering — while celebrities like Colbert slapped it away and used him as a pawn for their own agenda.

And this just in: The 8.2 overnight rating for the program among metered market households is down another 2 percent from the previous year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “That means that the final tally for the 2017 Emmys … is on track to slip below the 11.3 million viewers (and mere 2.8 rating among adults 18-49) that tuned in during 2016,” the publication noted Monday morning.
