Most women appreciate a well-groomed man. They’ve learned to deal with a little beard stubble — but today, many find themselves having to deal with leg stubble as well.

We’re moving beyond even the metrosexual phase to another level, in which men look at who they are and how they present themselves in a whole new way.

They do it purely for vanity.

Media commentator Mark Simpson refers to these next-level guys as “spornosexual” men.

They work out religiously and “manscape” fanatically, all in an effort to achieve the “sports star” or “porn star” look, Simpson says. They shave nearly everything and strive for the ultra-groomed, tanned, lean, selfie-obsessed look on display in the recent sexy Instagram photos of David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, and Justin Bieber.

The trend started in the 1980s with cyclists and swimmers, who began shaving body hair to eliminate drag and improve their times. Some even say shaving reduces the chance of injury when cyclists wipe out or fall.

Dr. Jamie Hakim, a lecturer at the University of East Anglia’s School of Film, Television and Media Studies, told the Daily Mail he puts the date this development reached “fad status” much later. “The rise of men going to the gym and sharing images of their worked-out bodies began around 2008,” he said.

Today, according to The Independent, almost half of all men in the U.K. trim or shave their leg hair.

But these men are not doing it to better compete in races. They do it purely for vanity, according to Men’s Health magazine, which recently reported half the men who responded to a recent Facebook survey thought trimming or shaving legs and arms frequently was normal.

The Guardian columnist Suzanne Moore described this trend best. “Witness the stars of reality TV and sport, gelled, glossed, branded into high-definition narcissism at a screen near you,” she wrote.

“These images of contoured, sculpted torsos, over-whitened teeth and fake tans are unreal and bring with them anxieties. Younger men feel they cannot live up to them and some older men feel this degree of self-absorption is weirdly emasculating. Some of it reflects an increasingly visual culture in which the mirror is not in a private bathroom but on Instagram. It is now a fact that if a Kardashian does not post a selfie every 15 minutes, a star in some distant galaxy dies.”

Are men embracing a sleek, perfectly sculpted physique to impress their followers on social media? Are they becoming as high-maintenance as some women? If so — why?

Some say the rise in the popularity of online pornography has taken its toll. Men see the physical fitness and shaved bodies of the male models as a goal within their reach. This has little to do with preparing for sports and much to do with preparing for the next selfie.

This trend has been a long time in coming. The inspiration for innovating the male body goes back to Ancient Greece — and, more recently, emerged in the form of competitive bodybuilding.

“I just use my muscles as a conversation piece, like someone walking a cheetah down 42nd Street,” Arnold Schwarzenegger said.

Bodybuilding is about overcoming physical and mental limits and challenging opponents. Meanwhile, spornosexuality doesn’t seem to have much to do with intellect or competition at all.

Women like a well-groomed, well-conditioned body, but most would rather have a sense of humor and general attractiveness. As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “A woman laughing is a woman conquered.”

Men, please put away the mirror, the hot wax, the leg razors. Toss the porn and spend a little more time cuddling your woman on the couch like old times. It won’t make you shine in the next selfie — but it will give you a relationship you can actually achieve and be proud to have.
