She was only 22, and her career was just beginning. She had her whole life ahead of her. Then a man, a deranged fan, approached Christina Grimmie, a talented singer, and shot her.

“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord,” the young singer’s publicist said in a statement over the weekend.

A vigil is set for Monday night for the 2014 “The Voice” contestant who was killed Friday in Orlando, part of a weekend of violence in the Florida town where a mass shooting in a gay nightclub also left 50 people dead and 53 injured.

The candlelight vigil for Grimmie will be held in her hometown of Marlton, New Jersey. “Would love to see everyone and anyone,” the slain singer’s brother, Marcus Grimmie, 23, wrote on Facebook.

Throughout the weekend as the world was focused on the violence in Orlando, musicians and fans have been mourning Grimmie. Pentatonix, Fifth Harmony, and “The Voice” coaches were among the many expressing condolences.

Singer Selena Gomez tearfully dedicated a song to Grimmie Saturday night while performing in Miami.

“I don’t really understand how this really happened,” said Gomez, who said she had met Grimmie at age 14 when Gomez’s stepfather, Brian Teefey, became Grimmie’s manager.

“One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her,” Gomez, 23, told the crowd.

Orlando police said Grimmie was shot by Kevin James Loibl, 27, at about 10:30 p.m. EDT Friday, half an hour after her concert with the band Before You Exit at the Plaza Live.

Grimmie took time after the show to sign autographs for fans when Loibl opened fire, police said. After the shooting started, Marcus Grimmie lunged at Loibl and tackled him. Loibl then shot and killed himself, police said. Orlando Police Chief John Mina called Marcus Grimmie “a hero.”

Police said Saturday that Loibl traveled more than 100 miles from St. Petersburg, Florida, to kill Grimmie, arming himself with two small-caliber handguns, two loaded magazines, and a large hunting knife.

“The Voice” coach Adam Levine personally called Grimmie’s mother offered to pay for the funeral and for her plane flight, her brother said on Facebook.

A short video of Grimmie’s final performance Friday, posted on Facebook and later shared by her brother, has been viewed more than four million times.

Loibl’s family posted a note on the door of their St. Petersburg home expressing sorrow for Grimmie’s death and saying they would have no other comments, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

As a teenager in Marlton, Grimmie found fame and a huge following by posting YouTube videos of her singing and playing keyboard in her bedroom, with a “Sonic the Hedgehog” poster taped to the wall behind her.

A GoFundMe page to support Grimmie’s family quickly garnered more than $125,000 in donations. An online petition to name a character after her in a forthcoming “Legend of Zelda” video game — Grimmie was an avid gamer — has more than 2,500 signatures.
