Many celebrities enjoy using their platform of fame and stardom to lecture the public about social and political issues — and by and large, the media praise them for those opinions.

That’s as long as the viewpoints match the same liberal perspectives of those doing the praising.

The script is flipped for conservatives in Hollywood. Being outspoken about right-of-center issues is a risky proposition that can seriously impact a person’s career. Consider briefly the names of some avowed conservative performers: Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, James Woods, Jon Voight and Gary Sinise. There are others, of course, but these are players with long-established careers who, once entrenched, found enough security to occasionally put out their opinions.

Those in other career categories or newcomers in the industry, however, find they must often remain silent about their conservatism if they have any hope of landing work. Even a veteran performer like Robert Davi (“The Goonies,” “Die Hard”) encounters professional pushback for his conservative views.

“I’m comfortable no longer having a career,” cracked the entertainer to LifeZette at the recent PolitiCon gathering in Pasadena, California. The 66-year-old Davi was and is an outspoken proponent of President Donald Trump and many conservative positions that differ greatly from those of Davi’s peers in Tinseltown.

And his positions, as well as those of other Hollywood conservatives, do not go unnoticed by the industry.

“Oh, there is certainly a blacklist these days,” Davi said. “I recently had been looked at joining, ironically, the show, ‘The Blacklist.’ But because I was a vocal Trump supporter, this led to me losing that offer. Even my agent confirmed that to me. So yes, this is a reality we deal with.”

However, this has not led to any change in, or withdrawal of, his opinion by the actor and musician. A former member of the Hollywood conservative group, Friends Of Abe, Davi also sits on the board of directors of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He also began his own radio program last fall, and Davi appeared on a number of discussion panels at PolitiCon, comfortably and confidently holding true to his conservative views and values.

“I think the biggest mistake conservatives will [make] in Hollywood is hide in the closet. They are showing fear, and that will not help the situation,” Davi said. He then compared the situation to the LGBTQ community — and how that group was not silent in pushing to achieve change on its behalf. “After all, what are conservatives in Hollywood if not a minority?”

The star is leading a charge of sorts — a charge that needs to occur if conservatives are going to gain true entry and acceptance into Hollywood’s cloistered gates.

It will require the efforts of established entertainers like Davi to open up that dialogue so that future artists will not feel the need to hide their beliefs.
