Director Rob Reiner is no fan of President Donald Trump. The “Stand by Me” and “Misery” filmmaker has been a consistent critic of the commander-in-chief, and he’s blown the Russia conspiracy theory horns plenty of times.

Reiner has never, though, engaged in the sort of vulgar, borderline deranged rants of anti-Trumpers like Robert De Niro.

He revealed in a recent interview with The Hill’s “Rising” that he is no fan of such tirades despite his feelings toward the president.

“You’re helping Trump by saying, ‘f*** Trump,’ because he can say, ‘Look at these people, these elitists,'” Reiner said in reference to De Niro’s anti-Trump meltdown at the Tony Awards.

He added, “There’s a very fine line between energizing the base and energizing the other side.”

As if to prove Reiner’s point, a Trump supporter interrupted the Broadway musical “A Bronx Tale” — which Robert De Niro directs — on Saturday by standing up and holding a “Keep America Great/Trump 2020” sign.

There’s no excuse for such an interruption or for politicizing a performance, but it shows the effect De Niro’s words are having.

Vulgar rants from leftists like De Niro are unfortunately becoming more and more commonplace among Trump’s Hollywood critics. Reiner, who is currently promoting his latest movie, “Shock and Awe,” is right in saying that such meltdowns turn off many regular Americans. Here’s hoping his recognition of this is the first step to more meaningful and middle-of-the-road political discussions from celebrities — but we aren’t holding our breath.
