Bruce Willis became a star thanks to ABC’s romantic drama “Moonlighting.” How did he thank the network? He scrambled to start a movie career ASAP.

That’s simply how the Hollywood system worked for decades. Television actors used their hit shows to segue into a film career, leaving episodic TV behind. That isn’t the case anymore.

Some of the biggest movie stars in the industry now adjust their schedules for TV gigs. Think Matthew McConaughey (HBO’s “True Detective”), Dwayne Johnson (HBO’s “Ballers”) and two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey (Netflix’s “House of Cards”).

The show brings back actors who were either unknown or had little Hollywood cachet at the time.

It’s still surprising to see so many established stars line up for the chance to join Netflix’s new ensemble comedy “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” The series, a prequel to the cult 2001 hit “Wet Hot American Summer,” brings back actors who were either unknown or had little Hollywood cachet at the time: Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper”), Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and Elizabeth Banks (The “Hunger Games” franchise, “Pitch Perfect”).

The big joke for the unlikely reunion? The returning cast members are roughly 40-plus years old, but they’re playing teenagers in a comedy set in 1981. That’s another reason to binge the new series, based on a spoof of ’80s camp comedies like “Meatballs.”

“First Day of Camp” is available for streaming now on Netflix. The show also stars Molly Shannon, Janeane Garofalo, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Christopher Meloni and Joe Lo Truglio.
