The team behind this Sunday’s Video Music Awards on MTV may be looking to make a political statement against a recent order by President Donald Trump potentially banning transgender people from military service.

The network has reportedly been seeking permission to host active-duty military members who identify as transgender.

“MTV has requested service member participation for this year’s VMAs,” Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Haverstick confirmed to CNN this week. “At this time the Department of Defense is reviewing the parameters of the request.”

It could be very tricky for MTV to pull off, as active-duty military members can have stiff restrictions put on their participation in public and televised events.

Making political statements at the VMAs will be nothing new for the award show. Lady Gaga arrived at the event in 2010 with four servicemen and a servicewoman who had been discharged, or who had voluntarily left the military, over the now-repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which barred gay men and women from military service.

Other examples of political activism at the show have included Beyonce’s reference to the Black Lives Matter movement in a performance, while former NSYNC member Lance Bass wore a “Love Trumps Hate” jacket last year.

While it remains to be seen whether MTV can actually pull off getting active-duty transgender military members to be at the award show at all, the program’s motivation to make a statement confirms that Sunday night’s show will get political one way or another.
