In what is becoming a new trend for old-fashioned beauty pageants, Miss Teen USA is nixing the swimsuit portion of its annual contest.

The Miss Universe Organization, which runs Miss Teen USA, has announced that the 51 women — they’re teens, really, ranging from 15 to 19 — will no longer be parading in heels and bikinis, which has always been stated as a way not to show off curves and perfect legs, but to show off athleticism.

In the upcoming July 30 pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Miss Teen USA’s contestants will strut on the stage in “athleisure” wear, to truly put the focus more on physical fitness for the participants.

“This decision reflects an important cultural shift we’re all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same,” Miss Universe President Paula Shugart wrote in a memo to the pageant’s state directors.

The announcement drew some backlash from haters, who blamed “fat feminists” for the move and wondered what the point of the pageant was now? But have those guys seen some of the yoga outfits young women wear everywhere these days?

The Miss World competition dropped its swimsuit portion in 2014. Chris Wilmer, national director of Miss World America/Miss United States said at the time, “It’s not just a beauty contest, it’s ‘beauty with a purpose.’ There didn’t seem to be a purpose to have the swimsuit.”

That competition wanted to showcase more charity work.

Miss Teen USA, like all pageants, has come under fire for exploiting young women with the swimsuit portion, determining merit based on sexy bods as much as intellect or talent. And in many corners of the world, the move was met with praise.

“I have worked with girls as young as 14 years old who were told they needed to walk across a stage in front of thousands of people, on camera and in six-inch heels and a bikini to be judged and compete against girls who ranged from 14-19 yeas old (by the way, that 14 year old still placed top 10 at Nationals!) … that’s a LOT of pressure!” Brittany D. Costa, a personal trainer who has been a “health and wellness guide” for the pageant, wrote on Facebook.

So instead of forcing these girls to become sexy beyond their years, having them dress in something that’s more age-appropriate is a much better idea!”

Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe are all owned by WME/IMG after Donald Trump sold the organization last year.

As for Miss America, that pageant — which promotes scholarship — will still feature a swimsuit portion during its upcoming Sept. 11 contest in Atlantic City, N.J.
