Kim Kardashian West added her name to the gun control debate on Friday, which was dubbed National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Many celebrities, including Kardashian, wore orange for the day in remembrance of victims of gun violence.

The 36-year-old mother of two, pictured above with husband Kanye West, took to her personal app to preach to the world about Second Amendment rights. “In almost 20 years, our country has made very little progress in enacting laws that would help protect innocent Americans from people who should not have access to firearms,” she wrote. “Right now, there are more guns owned by civilians in this country than in any other country in the world.”

The number of gun owners in America is a negative in Kardashian’s mind. What she doesn’t mention is that people are more empowered in America because of their Second Amendment rights — and that there are more peaceful and safe gun operators here than anywhere else in the world. She also managed to target a favorite enemy of celebrities today: President Donald Trump.

“In February of this year, President [Donald] Trump actually signed a bill revoking a regulation recommended by President [Barack] Obama that would have added 75,000 names of people with registered mental illnesses to a national background check database.”

Kardashian is often photographed with plenty of bodyguards around her, and likely lives in a very nice, well-protected house cut off from the public —  yet she wanted everyone to know that “this is crazy!”

The reality star brought up her recent robbery in Paris and tried to make clear she was not entirely against the Second Amendment. “After what happened to me in Paris, I know how important it is to be safe and to have armed security,” she said. “All of my security team is armed, but they also support stricter gun-control laws and believe that we should restrict access to firearms for people with mental illness, anyone previously convicted of a misdemeanor, those who have been subject to a temporary restraining order and those at a higher risk of committing gun violence.”

Oh, well — if a millionaire and her well-paid bodyguards think there should be strict gun control, then who are we to argue?

“We all have a voice and a right to feel safe, to be protected from people who are a threat, particularly when handed a deadly weapon. I want to help build a safer future for my children, and I believe together we can find ways to do that, while still protecting the rights of the American people,” Kardashian added.

Trying to discuss gun rights with a reality television star like Kardashian may involve an unprecedented amount of absurdity — so there is little point in doing that. All of Kardashian’s points are the usual oversimplified, sanitized, and digestible things celebrities say about gun control.

The truth of the matter is that gun violence and violence in general relate to cultural issues far beyond simple legislation. Gun laws and restrictions are proven to have the opposite effect when enacted (typical of most government laws) — and violence in general is down today despite the mass hysteria we hear from Hollywood.

Why do celebrities feel the need to do this? Why do they feel the need to thrust their voices into issues on which they have such a fragile grasp? Why do they feel the need to preach when their knowledge and personal philosophies are so shaky?

If there’s one thing gun owners in America don’t need, it’s the star of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” telling them whether or not they can own and operate firearms.
