Actor Russell Crowe went on a Twitter tantrum against Virgin Airlines after he was banned from bringing his hoverboard onto a plane. But Virgin Australia stood by its safety policy about hoverboards. (If only Crowe could have tortured Virgin with singing “I am Javert” it might have relented.)

Professional boxer Mike Tyson didn’t have a fight with the airlines over the hoverboard; but he was sent to the mat by a hoverboard recently. In an Instagram video, Tyson is seen zooming toward the camera laughing until the hoverboard clips the carpet and he falls flat on his back.

A priest in the Philippines learned he should leave the walking on water to Jesus when he was suspended for the sin of taking a spin on a hoverboard during Mass.

Hoverboards have set off a mini-crime wave across the country.

In Greensboro, N.C., a hoverboard owner was riding along on Mar. 30 when a red sedan pulled up and a passenger jumped out, pulled a gun and robbed the man.

In Arlington, Va., a thief brazenly stole a hoverboard from a child at 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

In Denver, a group of teens pulled up to two teens with a hoverboard, got out and robbed the hoverboards at gunpoint.

In Akron, Ohio, a 12-year-old boy was hit over the head with his hoverboard by a 17-year-old robber. Several hours later, a 9-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint of his hoverboard in front of his own home.

In St. Louis, an 18-year-old man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun pulled up to a man on a hoverboard and stole the board. When the robber got back in the car, the robbery victim drew his own gun and fired at the vehicle, shooting a passenger and robber as they fled the robbery.

In Atlanta, a 16-year-old girl was leaving a convenience store with her hoverboard when a robber put a gun to her friend’s head and threatened to pull the trigger if she didn’t turn over her hoverboard. The girls threw the hoverboard at the gunman and slammed the door behind them. The gunman shot through the door and injured the 16-year-old girl.

In Newark, N.J., a 15-year-old boy was riding his hoverboard when a group surrounded him.  After being punched and attacked, the victim fought back. Later, the attackers were identified and five teens were charged.

In Florida, a drug suspect tried to escape police on his hoverboard only to discover that, at 10 miles per hour, his vehicle was not nearly fast enough to outrun the cops.

We’ve reached a tipping point with the hoverboard. It’s gone from trendy toy to menace to celebrities, priests, parents and property. Now, we must worry about our kids being robbed of their hoverboards. This isn’t exactly the future Michael J. Fox made us all envision.
