Noma Dumezweni is an award-winning theater veteran and is Emma Watson-approved. But that doesn’t mean all fans are on board with the notion of a black actress playing the beloved Hermione Granger in an upcoming Harry Potter play in London.

When the news first broke in January, some people had a problem with Hermione’s change of race. Now that the first photos have arrived for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” — the controversy has been reignited.

The new story takes place 19 years after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling’s series, in which the epilogue revealed that Ron and Hermione were to marry and have two children, while Harry would wed Ron’s younger sister, Ginny.

(At the time, it broke fans’ hearts that Hermione and Harry didn’t wind up happily married.)

Watson tweeted her approval of the Dumezweni casting news, saying she was looking forward to seeing the actress on stage.

Rupert Grint has been replaced by Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley. He and Hermione are now married and have a daughter, Rose Granger-Weasley (Cherrelle Skeete).

Fans immediately turned to J.K. Rowling to see what she thought of the casting decision.

The author tweeted her approval back in January, too, explaining she never specified Hermione’s race when she initially wrote the character beyond “fuzzy hair.”

Swaziland-born, British-raised Dumezweni, 45, has addressed the murmurs of objections. She said she had encountered “unconscious” prejudice when going for roles in the past, but had not experienced people questioning her ability to play a character because of the color of her skin, the Evening Standard reported.

“It stems from ignorance. They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative,” said Dumezweni.

An acclaimed Shakespeare actress, Dumezweni said, “The only question we should ask is, ‘Are they good?’ I’ve met great actors, black and white, and I’ve met bad actors, black and white.”

Loyal Harry Potter fans are also dismayed by the fact that Weasley is no longer quite the ginger-haired boy that he was in the films.

Daniel Radcliffe is not playing the part of Harry Potter. That’s gone to Jamie Parker.

Potter is now working at the Ministry of Magic and living a seemingly sedate existence married to Ginny (Poppy Miller) with three school-age children. The producers of the play say the story will focus on Harry’s youngest son Albus, the “cursed child” who has to deal with his famous father’s legacy. Albus doesn’t wear glasses, by the way.

Although “Cursed Child” was written for the stage, it is being considered the eighth official story in the Potter series. It was written by Rowling, playwright Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany. Previews start June 7 in London’s West End at the Palace Theater, with the official opening performance on July 30. Scholastic will release the script book of “Cursed Child” on July 31, and as of now, anyway, there are no plans for this story to become a film.
