Gregg Allman, the legendary singer with The Allman Brothers Band, has passed away. He was 69. His publicist, Ken Weinstein, confirmed Saturday that Allman died in Savannah, Georgia, at his home.

As most of the rock world was well aware, Allman canceled a number of tour dates last year for health reasons. Earlier this year, in March, he canceled live performances for the rest of this year, as many media outlets reported.

Butch Trucks, a founding member of The Allman Brothers, also passed away earlier this year.

Allman contracted hepatitis C after years of substance abuse, and in 2010 underwent a liver transplant.

The singer had a difficult childhood. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he endured the shooting death of his father. He was then raised by his mother.

A statement on Allman’s official website said this: He “passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia … Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.”

He and his older brother, Duane, formed the nucleus of the Allman Brothers Band, as Fox 61 and the Associated Press reported. The group “featured tight guitar harmonies by Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, a pair of drummers and the smoky, blues-inflected voice of Gregg Allman.”

Some of their best-known songs included “Midnight Rider,” “Melissa” and the epic concert jam, “Whipping Post.”

Just last month the singer had posted this message on social media to his friends and fans: “Hey everyone. I just wanted y’all to know that I’m currently home in Savannah resting on my doctor’s orders. I want to thank you for all the love that you are sending. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Keep Rockin.’”
