Yes, it really has been almost 40 years since John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sang some of cinema’s most memorable love songs together in 1978’s “Grease.”

With the milestone of 40 years creeping up on the classic film and its stars, Newton-John revealed recently to the Mirror that she and Travolta have been mulling a possible reunion.

“We are thinking up ways … [We have] nothing to announce yet. Forty-year anniversary of ‘Grease,’ which I can’t believe,” said the 68-year old star. “Time goes so fast. It’s so exciting.”

“Grease” followed the love story of Sandy (Newton-John) and Danny (Travolta), two high school students from opposite sides of the tracks who try to rekindle a summer love despite differences in friends and lifestyles. The film, based on a Broadway musical, was a smash hit and made stars out of its leads. It won the 1979 Academy Award for Best Original Song for the tune, “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

But the dance numbers and music were what struck a chord with audiences, as the soundtrack became the second highest-selling of 1978.

A reunion for the biggest stars of “Grease” would actually be incredibly appropriate and timely. Updated versions of beloved musicals have become a trending creation in the last few years.

Travola, who is 63, has not yet commented on the potential reunion.

There have been live televised versions of musicals like “Grease” and “Hairspray” in recent years, which have all brought in huge viewer numbers. The positivity and upbeat nature of these musicals are likely refreshing to consumers who may want an escape from a media, television, and movie landscape that seems to get darker and darker with each passing year.

As for Newton-John and Travolta, a reunion would be great for their careers — but for very different reasons.

Travolta is in the middle of a comeback of sorts, with a recently praised turn in the highly rated “American Crime Story” television series.

Newton-John, meanwhile, has been considering retirement — which would mean a 40th-anniversary reunion with Travolta could mark her last big performance.

“As time goes on, I think of having more time off,” Newton-John recently said, according to The Sun. She mentioned she would like to spend more time dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research, something she has been passionate about since battling cancer in 1992.
