Bill Cosby, 79, continues to battle his way through his sexual assault case.

The comedian, whose lawyers say he is now legally blind, entered a Pennsylvania courthouse on Tuesday holding the arm of one of the members of his legal team for what is expected to be two days of pre-trial hearings, according to the Associated Press. Victims’ rights lawyer Gloria Allred also showed up.

The women have “tainted, unreliable memories.”

Cosby’s case centers on allegations made by Andrea Constand, the former women’s basketball team operations director at Cosby’s alma mater, Temple University. More than 50 women have accused the “Cosby Show” star of drugging them, of sexual misconduct and/or sexual assault. Cosby has consistently issued denials.

At issue now is whether the jury at Cosby’s criminal trial — set for June 5 in Norristown, Pennsylvania — will hear from 13 other accusers. Also at issue is whether Cosby’s damaging 2005 deposition in a civil suit brought by Constand — settled and sealed in 2006 but reopened in July 2015 — will be allowed in court.

Cosby’s lawyers, naturally, want to keep the 13 women out of court. They claim, according to AP, that Cosby “can no longer defend himself” because his bad eyesight prevents him from recognizing his accusers. And they say the women have “tainted, unreliable memories.”

Cosby’s lawyers argue the women’s memories have been marred by time, media coverage of the case, and their friendship with one another — and they plan to seek competency hearings for any who will be allowed to testify.

“Compounding the problem are the vague allegations of many of the accusers about the time and place of the alleged incidents,” Cosby attorneys Brian McMonagle and Angela Agrusa said in their motion, which was filed last month to once again attempt to dismiss the charges.

At least four of the women “did not realize that they were victims until they heard the accusations of other women in the media,” said Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, a psychologist who studies human memory, in the defense brief.

Constand, a 43-year-old Canadian now living in Toronto, said Cosby drugged her and assaulted her at his home. Since the fall of 2014, some five dozen other women have come forward to tell similar accounts.

Cosby was charged by District Attorney Kevin Steele in December 2015 with drugging and sexually assaulting Constand. The three counts of felony aggravated indecent assault came just a few weeks before the 12-year statute of limitations would have expired.

The prosecution intends to show that Cosby exhibited a pattern of sexual assault dating back to the 1960s and that incidents occurred in multiple states. Cosby has not been charged in any of these other accusations, due to statutes of limitation in other states. He has argued he can’t defend himself against vague accusations that stretch back to the 1960s.

Cosby faces up to 10 years in jail and a $25,000 fine if convicted. The legendary actor and stand-up comic has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on $1 million bail. Once an American idol, he has lost numerous endorsement deals and has had to cancel scores of comedy gigs.
