Late-night TV host Bill Maher has always been controversial, but even some of his most loyal fans must be hesitant to embrace his latest attempt at humor. Maher has suggested an incestuous relationship between the president and his daughter, Ivanka Trump.

Maher may be a comedian — but he still runs a show that attracts respectable politicians and pundits. His opinions expressed on “Real Time with Bill Maher” inspire legitimate news organizations to seek him out as a panelist and commentator.

Maher’s latest attempt at Trump-bashing was just plain weird. It was a “joke” that existed for the sole purpose of pushing the envelope. What makes that so wrong is that any conservative comedian who would make such an inappropriate “joke” at the expense of a liberal politician such as Barack Obama would find himself or herself fired, ostracized, and lambasted in the media as a pig, misogynist — and plenty of other terms people are so fond of these days.

On the latest episode of his HBO show, Maher spoke about Ivanka Trump’s relationship with her father as an adviser, saying, “A lot of us thought: Ivanka is gonna be our saving grace.”

He continued: “When he’s about to nuke Finland or something, she’s gonna walk into the bedroom and — ‘Daddy, Daddy.'”

While making that last remark and adding in a “Don’t do it, Daddy,” Maher made lewd hand gestures that suggested the president and his daughter were in an incestuous relationship.

Maher made lewd hand gestures.

Is this how low humor has fallen today? Extremely desperate and politicized late-night hosts now tell jokes that are the equivalent of what trolls say on social media when they’re desperate for reactions and attention.

A few fellow liberals have spoken out against Maher since he made his comments, but the truth is that the media and many of the powers that be who produce television will let just about anything slide these days — as long as someone is standing against Trump.
