A new WikiLeaks release of Clinton campaign Chair John Podesta’s emails suggest Hillary Clinton doesn’t carry much confidence in her daughter Chelsea’s capability as a campaign surrogate.

A conversation between top Clinton aide Huma Abedin and campaign staffer Marlon Marshall released by WikiLeaks Sunday suggests Clinton doesn’t want her own daughter campaigning for her, preferring high-profile celebrities instead.

“She said no to asking Chelsea. Would go herself before asking her daughter,” Abedin wrote in a May 2015 email with the subject line “Arkansas” — presumably in reference to an event in the state. “So we are at plan B,” Abedin continued. “Katy Perry it is.”

Clinton is not exactly known for her fondness of public events — or Arkansas, for that matter — so the idea that she would rather go there herself than send Chelsea Clinton speaks volumes.

It also reveals the extent to which the Democratic Party relies on star power to sway its supporters, and the extent to which many stars like Perry are content to be pawns for the Democratic Party — sometimes for cash.

It’s unclear whether Perry ultimately stumped for Clinton in Arkansas, but she did speak and perform at a Clinton campaign rally in Iowa in October of that year. A report from The Washington Free Beacon uncovered that the Clinton campaign paid Perry’s production company $70,000 in connection with the event.

Perry has since been a vocal supporter of Clinton — she has tweeted about or in reference to Clinton over 20 times in the last two weeks alone.
