Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) kept up her strident attacks on Donald Trump on Sunday, sticking to the theme she laid out the previous day — the Republican nominee for president is a “nasty, little bully” with a “dark and ugly soul.”

At appearances in the crucial swing state of Ohio, Warren tried to motivate the state’s young voters — a bloc that has been lukewarm toward Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton — to vote and even volunteer for her. She described Trump in vulgar terms and tried to glue him to Ohio’s Republican senator, Rob Portman, who has opened a size-able lead in his reelection battle.

The Massachusetts senator has flirted with a Black Lives Matter extremist who lauds cop-killers and lied about her ethnicity for personal gain.

“Donald Trump calls African-Americans thugs and Muslims terrorists and Latinos criminals — and Rob Portman and the Republican Party still back him,” she said during a stop in Cleveland on Sunday. “We believe that racism and injustice and bigotry have no place in this country. That black lives matter.”

The surrogate and the location were not coincidences. Warren is a progressive icon, and Ohio is a state Clinton supporters fear may be slipping away. Trump has led in the last three public opinion polls and now has an edge of 1.5 percentage points in the current RealClearPolitics average.

But Warren has her own dark history. The Massachusetts senator has flirted with a Black Lives Matter extremist who lauds cop-killers and lied about her ethnicity for personal gain.

From 1986 to 1995, she listed herself as Native American in the directory of the Association of American Law Schools. When she was a professor at Harvard University Law School in 1996, the university’s student newspaper repeated the claim.

“Although the conventional wisdom among students and faculty is that the Law School faculty includes no minority women,” the Crimson reported, a school spokesman said that “Professor of Law Elizabeth Warren in Native American.”

It was a lie, exposed by the Boston Herald in 2012.

Warren initially denied knowing why Harvard was promoting her as Native American. Later, she acknowledged that she listed herself as Native American in the law school directory in hopes of meeting other American Indians. She attributed her claims of being a Cherokee Indian to “family stories.”

Trump has tweaked Warren at times for the flap, calling her Pocahontas.

Warren’s false claims did not stop Massachusetts voters from sending her to the Senate in 2012, but her record since indicates that she has selective outrage about public figures with “dark souls.”

In July, she met with DeRay McKesson, a Black Lives Matter activist who has been stridently anti-police. He helped organize riots and protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore that destroyed the property of innocent people following incidents of alleged police misuse of force.

In the case of Ferguson, the contention that teenager Michael Brown was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a racist white police officer was so discredited that even President Obama’s Justice Department declined to bring federal charges against the officer after a state grand jury also found no basis for a criminal prosecution. In Baltimore, the prosecutor dropped charges in July against three officers after other police accused in the death of Freddie Gray had been acquitted.

McKesson has tweeted in support of a pair of convicted cop killers, Assata Shakur and Mumia Abu-Jamal. He also spoke approvingly of a speech Warren gave a year ago this month in which she said: “None of us can ignore what is happening in this country. Not when our black friends, family, neighbors literally fear dying in the streets. This is the reality all of us must confront, as uncomfortable and ugly as that reality may be. It comes to us to once again affirm that black lives matter, that black citizens matter, that black families matter.”

Never mind that statistical evidence simply does not support the narrative that white cops are killing innocent black people without cause in large numbers.

Warren rose to prominence by railing against greedy one-percenters who make money by ripping off everyone else. She has lambasted Trump for bragging that he made money during the economic downturn. But the Boston Herald reported that Warren and her husband profited in much the same way, scooping up homes at foreclosure auctions and quickly selling them for gains.

But Clinton’s biggest challenge firing up the progressive base rests not with her surrogates but with herself. During Warren’s speech in Cleveland, according to NBC News, a small number of young people shouted “Bernie was robbed” and chanted “Jill not Hill” — a reference to Green Party nominee Jill Stein — as they walked out.
