In an unusually combative press conference, Donald Trump on Tuesday lashed out at the press corps covering his campaign — calling them “losers” and at one point pointing to a reporter and calling him a “sleaze.”

“I’ve never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job.”

While the media has enjoyed having Trump on the campaign trail — and also reveled in higher audience numbers because of his presence — there has been a surge of negative stories about the presumptive GOP nominee. Trump, of course, knows that, but he also knows that many Americans dislike and distrust the media, making them an easy target.

“I’ve never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job,” Trump said of raising $5.6 million for various veterans organizations, the supposed reason for his mid-day press conference at Manhattan’s Trump Tower. But the donations received much scrutiny from the press as reports trickled out that veterans organizations had yet to see a dime of the money — which turned out to be inaccurate.

Trump was peeved from the start and insulted reporters repeatedly — until they’d had enough.

“It seems to me you’re resistant to the kind of scrutiny that you get with running for president of the United States,” said CNN anchor Jim Acosta.

Said Trump: “I like scrutiny, but you know what, when I raise money — excuse me, excuse me, I’ve watched you on television and you’re a real beauty — when I raise money for the veterans and it’s a massive amount of money, find out how much Hillary Clinton has given to the veterans, it’s nothing.”

“I don’t want the credit for it but I don’t want to be lambasted,” he said.

Reporters from Fox News, CBS News, and even the tabloid The Daily Mail expressed their frustration with Trump. But he slapped back, pointing to ABC reporter Tom Llamas and calling him a “sleaze.”

“What I don’t want is when I raise millions of dollars, and this sleazy guy over here — look, he’s a sleaze in my book,” Trump said. “You’re a sleaze because you know the facts and you know the facts well.”

Trump rattled off a list of organizations that benefited from the fundraiser, saying that he wanted to do this out of the “goodness of his heart,” noting that he himself donated $1 million of his own fortune.

Trump blasted the press pool for what he considered to be potentially libelous stories. “If the press writes false stories, like they did where I wanted to keep a low profile, I didn’t want all this credit, I wasn’t looking for credit, but I had no choice to do this because the press kept asking about it,” Trump said. “I find the political press to be unbelievably dishonest.”

When the press conference drew to a close, David Martosko of The Daily Mail told Trump that he achieved a new high. “You’ve set a new bar for the press corps, calling us losers to our faces,” Martosko said.

“Not all of you,” Trump said. “Just many of you.”

Martosko then asked the question on everyone’s mind — if this is what press conferences would be like if Trump wins the presidency. “Yes, it’s going to be like this,” Trump said.
