President-Elect Donald Trump promised to clean up corruption in Washington, D.C., and to implement extreme vetting of refugees as he spoke to a large crowd in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday night.

Trump spoke in Iowa as part of his unofficial “thank you” tour.

“A Trump administration will always put the safety and security of the American people first.”

And problems caused by poor federal policy were on the president-elect’s mind.

Earlier in the day, Trump visited the Ohio State University campus and met with the victims and first responders involved in a Nov. 28 slashing attack by a Somali student. Abdul Razak Ali Artan, 18, wounded 13 people, but was shot dead before he could kill anyone.

Artan’s social media posts indicated he was upset over how Muslims were treated. Artan was a Somali refugee via Pakistan, and a legal immigrant.

But Trump told the Iowa crowd that the attack was still proof that “extreme vetting” was needed when it came to immigrants and refugees from problematic nations.

“This horrific assault is yet one more tragic reminder that immigration security is now national security,” said Trump. “No more games … A Trump administration will always put the safety and security of the American people first.”

Trump said it wasn’t just about immigration and national defense, though. He highlighted his recent pick of Gov. Terry Branstad, Iowa’s Republican chief executive, to be his ambassador to China.

Trump said Branstad understands Chinese culture and government, and will be able to negotiate with the Chinese, whom he said were manipulating currency and breaking trade policies to take advantage of American consumers.

Trump also promised to punish U.S. companies that move plants overseas, and to cut the corporate tax rate to encourage businesses to grow and hire.

Trump also promised to fight corruption in the nation’s capital. Trump said he would impose a five-year waiting period on executive branch employees who want to be become lobbyists.

And Trump said he would also ban executive branch employees from ever becoming lobbyists for foreign governments.

“We’re going to drain the swamp of corruption in Washington, D.C.,” Trump said to applause.
