President Donald Trump ripped football player Marshawn Lynch in a tweet Monday morning for standing while the Mexican national anthem was played before a game while sitting in protest during the U.S. anthem.

Lynch, a running back for the Oakland Raiders, participated in a game Sunday against the New England Patriots that took place in Mexico City. After photos began circulating showing Lynch standing for the Mexican anthem and sitting for the U.S. anthem, the president weighed in on the player’s “great disrespect.”

“Marshawn Lynch of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders stands for the Mexican Anthem and sits down to boos for our National Anthem. Great disrespect!” Trump tweeted Monday. “Next time NFL should suspend him for remainder of season. Attendance and ratings way down.”

The president reignited the national controversy over players who choose to protest racial injustice in the country by kneeling during the national anthem when he spoke at a rally in Alabama back in September. After Trump called upon players to respect their country and their flag by standing and honoring the anthem, more players protested in response.

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell said at a press conference in late October that although he believes all players “should stand for the national anthem” to “honor our flag and our country,” he would not enforce the league’s policy that its players should stand.

In response, Trump knocked the NFL for exhibiting “no leadership” in its handling of the controversy as ratings and attendance continued to decline and polls indicated a marked drop in approval ratings for the league.

When White House counselor Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” Monday morning, she was asked to weigh in on the president’s tweet.

“The president’s been consistent about this from the very beginning, and look at what’s happened to many of these teams, the NFL viewership, and attendance at these games,” Conway said.

Conway noted that there are many other ways that football players could “get civically involved” without protesting while the national anthem is being played before games.

“And I mean the NFL has taken a big hit reputation-wise. They are in a world of hurt,” Conway added. “But the fact is that I hope Roger Goodell, the NFL, maybe they will work with us on big initiatives like combating the opioid epidemic … and drug demand. That would be terrific.”
