The man arrested for attempting to seize a police officer’s gun to “kill Donald Trump” at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday was illegally in the United States, federal prosecutors revealed during his arraignment.

“If he were on the street tomorrow, he would try this again.”

Steven Sandford, a 20-year-old British national, had overstayed his visa and was illegally residing in the U.S., court research showed. He was unemployed and living out of his car, a 2007 BMW 328i, in Hoboken, New Jersey, for a year and half before driving to Las Vegas — specifically to murder the presumptive GOP nominee.

Sandford said “he finally felt confident about trying it” after wanting to do so for more than a year. He said “if he were on the street tomorrow, he would try this again,” according to the five-page complaint against him.

Sandford never fired a gun until Friday, when he took to the Battlefield Vegas gun range to learn how to shoot and fired 20 rounds from a 9mm Glock pistol, according to court documents. Sandford was charged with an act of violence in a restricted area and remains in custody. His court date is set for July 5.

Trump has spoken out forcefully against an escalating wave of illegal immigrants committing violent acts against American citizens. Among the policies Trump has called for to protect Americans are a crackdown on so-called “sanctuary cities,” where local authorities refuse to report illegals to federal officials. Those policies contributed to the July 2015 murder in San Francisco of tourist Kate Steinle by an illegal alien who should have been deported.

“This senseless and totally preventable act of violence committed by an illegal immigrant is yet another example of why we must secure our border immediately,” Trump said in a statement at the time.

“This is an absolutely disgraceful situation — and I am the only one that can fix it. Nobody else has the guts to even talk about it. That won’t happen if I become president.”

At a recent campaign rally in California, Trump brought several people on stage whose family members were murdered by illegal immigrants, including Jamiel Shaw, whose son was shot and killed in 2008.

“They all have a very similar story to tell, people that shouldn’t have been here, people that should have never been allowed to come over the border, and they come here like it’s nothing, they walk through it like it’s nothing,” Trump said.

“We’re going to stop it, and we’re going to build a wall.”
