A Muslim college student in Louisiana who told police that two men supporting President-Elect Donald Trump attacked her, robbed her and snatched away her headscarf admitted Thursday that she had fabricated the entire report.

The unnamed 18-year-old student at University of Louisiana at Lafayette told police that two white men who wore clothing affiliated with Trump’s presidential campaign beat her with a metal object and knocked her to the ground just after Trump’s victory was announced. The woman told the Lafayette Police Department the men leaped out of a gray sedan and shouted racial slurs at her after beating her in the back with the metal object, robbing her of her wallet and absconding with her hajib. The woman declined medical treatment at the time.

“Getting people upset and afraid is not the way to express your discontent.”

Immediately after the Muslim student issued her complaint, the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana jumped at the opportunity to cry anti-Muslim bigotry.

“We condemn this rhetoric and this behavior. We call on all Louisianians to reject anti-Muslim bigotry,” the ACLU of Louisiana said in a statement. “Muslim Americans and residents have the same rights that we all do: to practice our religion freely and openly, to live and work without fear, and to participate equally in public life,” the ACLU of Louisiana said in a statement.

But everything changed when the police revealed that the woman soon retracted her report Thursday and admitted she had lied about the entire story.

“She made up the entire story about being attacked, about her hijab being taken. There was no truth to any of it,” Lafayette Police Department spokesman Cpl. Karol Ratcliff said, according to ABC News. “She caused all this stir over nothing. I don’t know what her motivation was.”

“Getting people upset and afraid is not the way to express your discontent,” Ratcliff added. “It’s just not the way to do it. And it’s not ok and that’s why there’s a consequence.”

Police said the woman would be charged with a misdemeanor for filing the false report.
