Dr. Thomas Sowell called the widespread belief that African-Americans won’t consider a break from the Democratic Party “utter stupidity” during a Tuesday interview on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

Sowell, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution with Stanford University, is renowned as an economist, social theorist, and political philosopher. He called out both Democrats and the NAACP for abusing their political hold over black Americans.

Sowell said black Americans and their communities have been served poorly by their allegiance to the Democratic Party and praised Republican nominee Donald Trump for reaching out to a demographic Republicans often bypass.

“I welcome the fact that [Trump] did indeed put the racial issues on the agenda because the Republican Party — for reasons that are totally unfathomable for me — has not attacked the Democrats on things on which the Democrats are totally vulnerable and totally have no way out,” Sowell told LifeZette Editor-in-Chief Laura Ingraham.

In addition to urging Republicans to take on Clinton for her party’s failed policies, Sowell also lambasted the NAACP for its Republican “ambushes” and its agenda to “embarrass” Trump for his outreach attempts.

“The NAACP is this wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party, and of course they did everything they could to embarrass [Trump]. And you should never give them legitimacy as if the NAACP owns the black vote,” Sowell said.

Ingraham noted that, although Trump has made “mistakes,” she believes the GOP nominee should continue his outreach efforts into the black and Hispanic communities.

“I think this is going to take a long time. Whether [Trump] wins or loses in November, it’s going to take a long time to kind of chip away at this hold the Democrats have. It’s not going to happen overnight,” Ingraham said.

Sowell responded, adding that “the journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step, and most Republicans have not taken that single step.”

Calling out Clinton for her “failed” record of public service for black Americans, Sowell warned that Clinton’s vision for America would take the country in a dangerous direction if she — as well as Democrats in the House and Senate — were to be elected in November.

“If Hillary gets in there, the Democrats are going to be at her beck and call,” Sowell said. “If Trump gets in there, then the Republicans will not be at his beck and call. And I think that Congress has an important role — especially the Senate — which is going to determine what kind of law we’re going to have in this country over the next generation by who gets appointed to the Supreme Court. And I think that’s at least a salvageable situation.”

He warned that a Clinton presidency, unchecked by Congress or the Supreme Court, would be “a form of dictatorship.”

“We’ve survived all kinds of questionable presidents in the past because there was a limit to what they could do,” Sowell said. “Hillary Clinton’s agenda will take those limits off, and it will be whatever she feels like doing.”
