Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s promise to be a “check” on either a President Clinton or Trump was an odd lesson to take from his crushing March primary loss to Trump in his own state, LifeZette Editor-in-Chief Laura Ingraham said Wednesday on “Special Report” on Fox News.

“It’s very interesting that Trump could very well be president and he feels like, ‘I’ve got to be a check on this populist guy who’s got this record number of Republicans that turn out and vote. Or Hillary Clinton — yeah, I’ll be a check on her,'” Ingraham said.

Ingraham noted Rubio couldn’t even convince voters during his presidential campaign that he’d be a strong enough check against the current president.

“One of the reasons he lost his own state in the primary fight was because a lot of voters didn’t think he was a powerful enough check on Obama,” Ingraham said.

If Rubio is re-elected to the U.S. Senate, Ingraham believes Rubio will find he has more in common with a President Clinton than a President Trump.

“A lot of people think in the first 100 days of Hillary, Marco will agree to immigration reform, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and probably some other key measures,” Ingraham said, adding that Rubio would probably get along with Hillary better.

“[Rubio] might have a 100-day period with Hillary that’s a lot more hospitable and comfortable than a 100-day period with Donald Trump.”

If Rubio continues down this path of pandering when convenient and recklessly firing shots at fellow politicians, Ingraham said, “in 2020 [Rubio is] not going to be able to run for president.”
