Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said in a tweet on Saturday that the health care executive order President Donald Trump signed Thursday, which loosened several Obamacare regulations, “will make the consumer king” by supplanting insurance companies.

After watching the GOP-led Senate repeatedly fail to fulfill its promise to repeal and replace Obamacare over the summer, Trump signed the executive order to help alleviate the burden Obamacare has placed on Americans’ shoulders — allowing people to form groups and purchase health insurance plans across state lines. Paul, who worked alongside Trump in crafting the plan, praised the action as a necessary and beneficial step toward returning power back to the people.

“Proud to have worked on this with @realDonaldTrump — this plan will help so many. We will make the consumer king, not insurance companies!” Paul tweeted.

Paul issued his tweet in response to a tweet Trump posted Saturday morning in which he defended the move from criticisms leveled by both Democrats and Republicans.

“Very proud of my Executive Order which will allow greatly expanded access and far lower costs for HealthCare. Millions of people benefit!” the president said.

The president also tweeted earlier in the morning, “Health Insurance stocks, which have gone through the roof during the ObamaCare years, plunged yesterday after I ended their Dems windfall!”

In response to critics who claim that the president’s executive order will harm lower-income Americans, Paul said Thursday at the signing ceremony for the executive order that this plan “specifically targets and will help people who don’t have insurance, or people for whom insurance is too expensive.”

The Kentucky senator also argued that allowing lower-income Americans who can’t afford health insurance by themselves to band together in forming a group that can purchase insurance plans across state lines creates a large enough pool of money to purchase insurance that would have been otherwise unattainable.

On Thursday, the president said in a statement that he signed the executive order because “the time has come to give Americans the freedom to purchase health insurance across state lines, which will create a truly competitive national marketplace that will bring costs way down and provide far better care.”

That same day, the president said on Twitter that Congress’ lack of action on delivering the health care reform the GOP promised forced him to take whatever actions he could to begin “giving America the great HealthCare it deserves” in a “piece by piece” process.
