In an astonishing claim, Leon H. Wolf, writing for RedSate, insinuated that Donald Trump in some way paid Phyllis Schlafly and Jerry Falwell Jr. to support his campaign.

“The chances that Trump has extended favors to them that they don’t want uncovered is probably pretty high,” Wolf asserted in an example of spectacularly irresponsible journalism barely a step removed from libel.

To suggest that Schlafly could be bought and paid for — at the age of 90 no less — is to enter pure fantasy land. Likewise the idea that Falwell, who according to reports made more than $800,000 as president of Liberty University in 2014 alone, would need Trump’s money.

Schlafly is the godmother of the American conservative movement. In 1964, she authored “A Choice Not an Echo,” which criticized Rockefeller Republicans and their pro-globalist interests, identifying a problem that to this day is at the heart of intraparty conflict within the GOP. Schlafly called them “Kingmakers.” We know them as the GOP Establishment.

Then, in 1972, Schlafly organized the STOP ERA campaign to fight against passage of the Equal Rights Amendment.

“What I am defending is the real rights of women. A woman should have the right to be in the home as a wife and mother,” she said. “Feminism is doomed to failure because it is based on an attempt to repeal and restructure human nature.”

By the time she got involved, the Equal Rights Amendment had already been ratified by 28 of the 38 states needed to be added to the Constitution. Nevertheless, her campaign was successful, and the radical amendment failed, receiving ratification in only two additional states.

Since then, the indefatigable Schlafly has been one of the most vocal and passionate advocates for the conservative cause. She has spoken out repeatedly against globalist economic interests, feminism, needless military adventures, abortion, the promotion of homosexuality and promiscuity in schools, and mass immigration from Central and South American.

Schlafly herself is explicit in her reasoning for supporting Trump. She sees him as the key to winning the battle she has been fighting for decades.

“Trump is the only hope to defeat the Kingmakers,” she told Breitbart News this month. “Because everybody else will fall in line. The kingmakers have so much money behind them.”
