House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters Wednesday that Obamacare has achieved its goals — including making health care more affordable.

Pelosi made her remarks during a news conference following a rare trip to Capitol Hill by President Obama, who is trying to preserve the signature legislative achievement of his administration.

“In all three of those arenas, the Affordable Care Act has been a big success.”

Rising costs, Pelosi said, were “unsustainable.” Democrats muscled through the Affordable Care Act, which Pelosi said Wednesday had three goals — reducing costs, increasing access to insurance, and improving insurance benefits.

“In all three of those arenas, the Affordable Care Act has been a big success,” she said.

Undeniably, more people have insurance as a result of the Affordable Care Act — some 20 million, under administration estimates, although some experts contend the real figure is lower than that. And for people who qualify for subsidies on the health care exchanges, premium costs have been low — although many find they are paying much higher out-of-pocket expenses than they had anticipated.

But millions of families who do not receive subsidies likely would be surprised to learn that Pelosi thinks Obamacare is making health care more affordable. Remarkably, she made her comments months after the Obama administration acknowledged that premiums of insurance plans will skyrocket in 2017 — an average of 25 percent for 27-year-olds purchasing the second-cheapest “silver” plan on the online marketplace.

At a dueling news conference held by House Republican leaders and Vice President-Elect Mike Pence, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) pointed out that people with employer-sponsored health insurance have seen premiums rise by an average of $4,300.

“Everything President Obama promised about health care has failed,” he said. “We are so thankful we have a new administration coming that had the wisdom to listen and the courage to lead.”
