A knife-wielding radical Islamic terrorist was killed by police in London near Parliament Wednesday afternoon, according to initial judgments on motive issued by authorities.

The attacker, whose identity has yet to be revealed by law enforcement, drove his car into a crowd on Westminster Bridge before trying to ram it through the gates outside Parliament. After crashing his car, the assailant exited his vehicle and attacked bystanders with a knife.

“Islamist-related terrorism is our assumption,” said Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley.

At least four other people were killed, including a police officer, and at least 40 others injured during the attack. Some injuries are “catastrophic” according to authorities.

Several outlets reported witnesses said the attacker appeared to be “Asian” — a term commonly used in the U.K. to describe people from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. “We were taking photos of Big Ben and we saw all the people running towards us, and then there was an Asian guy in about his 40s carrying a knife about seven or eight inches long,” eyewitness Jayne Wilkinson told reporters in London.

The attack is at least the third act of Islamic terror involving an edged weapon to occur in Europe this year. On March 17, a father and son in Paris had their throats slit by an “Allahu-Akbar”-yelling family member. On Jan. 11, a person was stabbed in a store in Oberhausen, Germany by a man who was praising Allah at the time.

The attack in Westminster was similar to a 2016 terrorist incident at Ohio State University in the United States. On Nov. 28, 2016, Somali refugee and self-proclaimed ISIS loyalist Abdul Razak Ali Artan rammed his car into a crowd before exiting and proceeding to embark on a stabbing rampage.

Last year saw a spate of vehicular and knife attacks perpetrated by Islamic terrorists in Europe. In France, there were at least 11 Islamic terror attacks involving edged weapons or vehicles. These included the truck attack in Nice on Bastille Day, which claimed the lives of 86 people, and the attack on a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during which a priest had his throat slit.

Germany saw at least six Islamic terror attacks perpetrated with blades or vehicles, including the truck attack at a Christmas market in Berlin which claimed the lives of 11 innocents, and an ax attack committed by an “Allahu-Akbar”-yelling refugee on a train, which injured five.

There is a chance the attacker could have been motivated by current events. “A European security official says there was increased chatter on jihadi networks Tuesday following the U.K.’s adoption of an electronics ban aboard flights from certain mostly Muslim countries,” reported the Associated Press.

However, the attack also comes a day after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdoğan issued a warning to Europe in the wake of a diplomatic spat with the Netherlands. “Arabs have a good saying, I always say, ‘men dakka dukka.’If you hit us, sorry, we will hit you back,” said Erdoğan. “If Europe continues this way, no European in any part of the world can walk safely on the streets,” he warned.

Wednesday is also the anniversary of the mass Islamic terrorist attacks in Belgium.
