A gang member charged with stabbing a Maryland teenager to death in June had been deported not once but twice back to El Salvador within the last two years, U.S. immigration officials and Montgomery County prosecutors said Friday.

Oscar Delgado-Perez, 28, was charged with first-degree murder for “directing” and participating in stabbing 18-year-old Cristian Villagran-Morales more than 40 times in a Gaithersburg park. The incident occurred on June 16 with at least two other members of the MS-13 gang participating, The Washington Post reported. On Friday, a judge ordered Delgado-Perez to be held without bond.

“He was just about to leave that day for Texas to flee the area. He knew there was a warrant for his arrest.”

Although police had been searching for him for two months, Delgado-Perez finally was apprehended on Wednesday in Rockville.

“He was just about to leave that day for Texas to flee the area. He knew there was a warrant out for his arrest,” Montgomery State’s Attorney’s Office prosecutor Robert Hill said, according to The Post.

Hill added that when police apprehended Delgado-Perez, “He said to police: ‘If I hadn’t been drunk this morning, you guys would never have caught me.’”

Although officials said they could find no history of previous adult convictions for him, the details surrounding why Delgado-Perez gained re-entry into the U.S. after being deported to El Salvador twice remain unclear.

But Delgado-Perez’s situation echoes scores of other examples of illegal aliens committing crimes and either avoiding deportations or returning afterward.

According to an April 28 hearing from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, titled “Criminal Aliens Released by the Department of Homeland Security,” the Obama administration’s lax immigration policies have to led to the release of a stunning 86,288 criminal aliens — who committed 231,074 crimes since 2013.
