Even liberals are tearing into President Obama for blaming anyone and everyone but himself for President-Elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election.

“Every time I hear this sort of thinking from the president — I think this president, okay — but this is a breathtaking denial,” columnist Mike Lupica told Joe Scarborough on MSNBC Thursday.

Scarborough mentioned reports that a few weeks before the election, Obama expressed that he was dissatisfied with the Clinton campaign’s ground game and felt that it might cost the Democrats the election.

In addition to the Clinton campaign’s poor efforts on the ground, Obama also singled out Fox News for Trump’s win. “In this election, [voters] turned out in huge numbers for Trump. And I think that part of it has to do with our inability, our failure, to reach those voters effectively. Part of it is Fox News in every bar and restaurant in big chunks of the country, but part of it is also Democrats not working at a grassroots level, being in there, showing up, making arguments,” Obama said in an interview published in Rolling Stone earlier this week.

“Every time I hear him blame [Trump’s win] on other things, it’s like when those television ministers used to get into trouble and they would be … blaming their problems on the motel,” joked Lupica, a liberal commentator. Obama “was one of the people who lost the Rust Belt … it wasn’t just her,” Lupic said.

Lupica said Obama was clearly oblivious to his role in the Democratic Party’s demise. “He’s still spiking the ball here, and … the last eight years in so many ways just got repudiated.”
