“Diversity and inclusion” is the new frontier for political correctness — and it’s even more insidious than its predecessor. The term certainly sounds friendlier than the cold, more obviously Orwellian “political correctness,” but make no mistake — the two are effectively synonymous.

Despite the “diversity” part, the term demands nothing short of complete uniformity in accepting radical, left-wing ideas about multiculturalism, and despite the “inclusion” part, its focus on forced levels of “diversity” inherently demands nothing short of the exclusion of white people.

Virginia Tech’s message couldn’t be clearer. Those who want tenure must be actively, vocally, and visibly committed to living and breathing affirmative action in their daily lives.

Now, one university has made committed allegiance to this troubling ideological idea a condition of tenure. Virginia Tech’s 2015-2016 “Guidelines for Promotion and Tenure Dossiers” requests that applicants summarize their contributions to “inclusive practices and diversity initiatives.”

Candidates are advised to include a “list of activities that promote or contribute to inclusive teaching, research, outreach, and service.” The document also requires that prospective candidates’ statements “provide all reviewers with a clear understanding of the candidate’s … active involvement in diversity and inclusion.”

The document also requires that any research or grant proposal “identify whether the proposal addresses broadening participation or increasing engagement of underrepresented groups within one’s field, or otherwise advances knowledge about diverse populations, as defined by one’s field.”

Virginia Tech’s message couldn’t be clearer. Those who want tenure must be actively, vocally, and visibly committed to living and breathing affirmative action in their daily lives. “Virginia Tech should not be allowed to condition employment and promotion upon acceptance and active participation in an ideological agenda, especially one that purposefully privileges certain identity groups to the detriment of others,” writes Ashley Thorne for the National Association of Scholars.

“The university may insist that these are guidelines, not mandates. But the added language on ‘diversity and inclusion,’ in this context with Virginia Tech’s official blessing, sends a clear message to faculty candidates for promotion and tenure: Embrace this ideology or be left behind,” she continues.

While Virginia Tech is apparently the first college or university to make commitment to this ideology a condition of full-time permanent employment, it is not the first to embrace it.

Nearly every American university, from relatively unknown state schools like Ferris State University in Michigan, to prestigious and well-respected universities like Yale and Wake Forest, have entire departments or offices dedicated to “diversity and inclusion.”

Diversity and inclusion has even managed to infiltrate the corporate world with stunning effectiveness. The nation’s leading financial institutions, from Goldman Sachs to JPMorgan Chase, have diversity and inclusion offices. Indeed, “diversity and inclusion” is so pervasive in the corporate world that Georgetown University teaches a course titled “Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Management.”

This rebranding of political correctness has its benefits. Most institutions couldn’t get away with having an official office of “political correctness,” a direct and obvious assault on the principles of intellectual freedom and the free exchange of ideas. But no one — except a racist right-winger of course — could possibly object to the innocuous and positive-sounding “diversity and inclusion” office.

“In simple terms, diversity is the mix; inclusion is getting the mix to work well together,” reads the Royal Bank of Canada’s website. In truth, however, “diversity” means the ideologically motivated desire to increase the number of minorities at a given institution, and “inclusion” means ensuring that no white person is allowed to complain about it.
