Advocates for immigration policies that put the interests of Americans first are voicing concern over President-Elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Labor, Andrew Puzder.

“President-Elect Trump’s choice of Andrew Puzder to run the Department of Labor raises questions and concerns about whether he will vigorously defend the interests of American workers,” said Dan Stein, director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “Puzder has served as an executive of a fast food conglomerate — an industry that has thrived on low-wage labor, illegal workers, and which has lobbied for greater access to foreign guest workers to maximize corporate profits,” Stein added.

“Trump’s pick for labor secretary is perhaps the worst person imaginable for that role.”

Puzder even authored an op-ed for Politico in 2013 in favor of liberal-style immigration reform — including amnesty. “Comprehensive immigration reform should resolve the status of the current undocumented population and fix the system of legal immigration to help prevent illegal activity in the future while providing the economy with a capable and motivated workforce,” Puzder wrote.

“Based on Puzder’s support for increased guest workers, can struggling American workers count on him to maintain tight labor markets that promote wage increases?” asked Stein. Given that Puzder advocated for amnesty and uses phrases such as “undocumented population” to describe illegal immigrants, the answer may indeed be no.

Center for Immigration Studies Executive Director Mark Kirkorian, writing in the National Review, was even less diplomatic than Stein. “Trump’s pick for labor secretary is perhaps the worst person imaginable for that role,” Kirkorian wrote.

“Andrew Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of fast-food chains Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, and others. He is one of the nation’s most outspoken business voices for Gang of Eight-style immigration policies. He didn’t just sign an open letter once as a favor to a friend; he’s been a high-profile champion of amnesty and huge increases in immigration and guest workers,” Kirkorian continued.
