Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has taken Virginia.

Fox News is calling the Old Dominion State for Clinton with just over 90 percent of precincts reporting. At just past 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, Clinton had 48 percent to Donald Trump’s 47 percent — but large, traditionally Democratic counties remained outstanding.

The results in Virginia were far closer than anyone had expected.

Clinton led Trump in every single poll taken in Virginia and listed on RealClearPolitics since the race began — 32 in total. In only seven of those, however, did Clinton lead Trump by double digits. In more than half of the polls, Clinton led Trump by between 5 and 8 points.

It was clear that Clinton was confident in a Virginia victory. She hadn’t made a single personal appearance in the state since the securing the Democratic nomination, sending surrogates instead.

Trump, however, made a handful of appearances in Virginia leading up to the election, including one in Leesburg this Sunday. Despite his 25th hour push in the state, Trump was widely seen to have conceded Virginia to Clinton in mid-October when his campaign pulled all resources from the state, closing its ground operations there.

However, the final, unexpectedly close results suggest that Trump’s last-minute campaigning in Virginia actually paid off in narrowing the margin in the state.
