Many Republican billionaires who contribute heavily to GOP campaigns will vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton in November if Donald Trump wins the party’s nomination, conservative journalist Tucker Carlson predicted Thursday.

Carlson, editor of the Daily Caller, said on “The Laura Ingraham Show” that the GOP’s big donors are clustered in large urban areas and share the values of the wealthy elite in the Democratic Party. To them, a populist candidate like Trump is unacceptable, he said.

“They have much more in common fundamentally with Hillary than they do with Trump,” Carlson said. “They’re not stupid. They see that Trump really is a threat to their power.”

Carlson said the donors know that Clinton, despite campaign rhetoric, she is more reliable from their perspective.

“Basically they know that Trump is a traitor to their class,” he said. “He’s a whistle-blower on their activities. And he is the one who’s going to give them the roughest ride if he’s elected. So of course they would vote for Hillary. Why wouldn’t they? It’s in their interest. Hillary is a total corporatist. She’s not a revolutionary. She doesn’t mean a thing that she says.”

The split reveals a fundamental difference between the two parties, Carlson said. Big givers in the Democratic Party basically agree with rank-and-file Democratic voters and share their values.

“The donors in the Republican Party not only disagree with Republican primary voters, they hate them,” he said. “And that’s just a basic weakness. It’s an unstable party as a result of that.”

Those same people, Carlson said, have a “child-like faith in the wisdom of the communist leaders of China.” Trump, famously, has challenged the conventional wisdom in Washington that trade with China benefits America.

“The same people who made fun of Trump’s trade policies, make fun of his immigration policy, are the same ones who believe the leaders of China really know what they’re doing,” he said.

Trump’s America First platform resonates with people who don’t stand to make millions of dollars from trade, Carlson said.

“American foreign policy ought to advance American interests,” he said. “That’s a much smarter and better way to make your decisions … There’s nothing immoral in acting in your own interests. In fact, that’s your job if you’re the U.S. government. That’s your only job.”
