Former U.S. Attorney: Comey ‘Was and is a Dangerous Man’

Former federal prosecutor Joseph diGenova on Tuesday praised President Donald Trump for firing FBI Director James Comey.

It was long overdue, said diGenova, who served as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia under President Ronald Reagan.

“He should pick a fine, professional person in law enforcement.”

“I’m very proud of the president of the United States,” he told LifeZette. “He did exactly what should have been done. He [Comey] was and is a very dangerous man.”

By “dangerous,” diGenova said he means that “[Comey] is so unpredictable and so self-indulgent and so self-righteous.”

The White House said Trump fired Comey after consulting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The reason offered was the fact that Comey usurped the authority of then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch by calling a news conference and presenting disparaging information about 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in announcing that he was recommending no criminal charges over her handling of classified information.

Democrats mocked that explanation and suggested the real reason for the firing was to stymie an investigation in possible collusion between Russian agents and the Trump campaign. That was hogwash, diGenova said. He said whatever investigation is underway will not be affected by replacing the director.

“It won’t make any difference,” he said.

DiGenova said Trump should move quickly to name a replacement and urged him to pick a well-regarded figure such as former New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

“He should pick a fine, professional person in law enforcement,” he said.
