Democrats are now alleging that “Russian hacking” did so much damage in the 2016 presidential election it is worthy of an independent commission similar to the one that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The proposed independent commission would investigate alleged Russian interference in the election — handing Democrats a platform to keep the “red scare” drumbeat going into the new administration.

“It was a very hard campaign for [Clinton]. The name-calling. The email intrusion. The misinterpretation of what she had done with emails.”

“There should be a 9/11-type outside examination of this,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said on MSNBC Wednesday.

Feinstein, the ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, parroted party talking points on the hacking issue to host Andrea Mitchell. The California senator asserted the Russians were not only responsible for hacks that exposed damaging Democratic communications, but that they acted with the intention of aiding President-Elect Donald Trump.

The exact identities of the hackers have yet to be definitely determined by intelligence officials — though CIA analysts have suggested the evidence available points to Russian state actors. It remains completely inconclusive what motivated the hackers to target the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign Chair John Podesta — a point made Tuesday by several offices from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

“ODNI is not arguing that the [CIA] is wrong, only that they can’t prove intent,” one of the three officials told Reuters. “Of course they can’t, absent agents in on the decision-making in Moscow.”

The remaining uncertainty has not stopped excuse-hungry Democrats like Feinstein from mounting a furious offensive to create a post-election narrative that Russian hacking caused Democrat Hillary Clinton to lose the presidential election.

She said the Russians wanted to “dirty up” Clinton. Feinstein did, however, admit there is no evidence the Russians interfered in the actual election process.

Feinstein also asserted “it is very credible” that Russian President Vladimir Putin knew about the hacking.

Feinstein chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2009 to 2015.

Feinstein is not exactly a nonpartisan source on the issue. She told Mitchell she recently had dinner with Clinton after an event honoring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.

“I am extraordinarily fond of this woman,” said Feinstein. “It was a very hard campaign for [Hillary Clinton]. The name-calling. The email intrusion. The misinterpretation of what she had done with emails … I think she has a spine of steel … It’s really a tough time for a wonderful human being.”

MSNBC remained obsessed with Russian hacking on Wednesday afternoon. Reports and interviews about the subject continued after Mitchell signed off.

The calls for a “9/11 Commission” show just how much the Democrats feel they lost on Election Day.

To some Democrats, apparently, the election of Donald Trump was so bad, it requires a commission like the one that looked into the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
