Long before Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) became a prominent NeverTurmper, he appears to have been a favorite Republican among the Clinton camp.

According to emails obtained by Citizens United through a Freedom of Information Act request and first given to LifeZette, Clinton Foundation executive Doug Band referred to Graham as the “bff” of longtime Hillary Clinton confidante Huma Abedin in November 2009.

“Lindsey said with all due respect I don’t measure up to Huma”

At the time, Band was traveling with former president Bill Clinton to a conference in Israel and mentioned in an email to Abedin, then the deputy chief of staff at the State Department, that Graham was at the event.

“So funny! Tell him hi,” Abedin replied.

“Lindsey said with all due respect I don’t measure up to Huma,” Band wrote.

Graham, whose bid for the GOP nomination this year flamed out spectacularly, has been one of Trump’s harshest Republican critics. During the primary campaign, he called the real estate mogul a “jackass.” In May, he said he could not support Trump because he is not a “reliable Republican conservative nor has he displayed the judgment and temperament to serve as commander in chief,” according to The Hill.

In June, Graham urged Republicans to un-endorse Trump over his criticism of the “Mexican judge” presiding of a civil case involving Trump University.

Last week, Graham told CNN that Trump owes President Obama an apology for having said previously that he believed the president was born in Kenya. And Graham, in a September 8 interview with Bloomberg, blasted Trump for calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a strong leader.

“I think this is the biggest miscalculation since people thought Hitler was a good guy,” he said.

Despite Band’s 2009 description of Graham as Abedin’s best friend forever, though, he is not fan of Clinton, either. He told Bloomberg that the former secretary of state’s performance at NBC’s Commander-in-Chief Forum was “equally unnerving” and said he would not vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson.

“I may write in John McCain,” he said.
