Donald Trump’s son and adviser on Monday called on his father’s rivals for the nomination to clear the field and unite against Hillary Clinton, saying the ongoing barrage negative ads against his dad only hurts Republicans’ general election prospects.

“It’s actually a very silly strategy,” said Eric Trump during an appearance on “The Laura Ingraham Show.” “I mean, everybody should band behind him. He’s gonna win this,” he said. “We should bloody the candidate as little as humanly possible. And we should start going after Hillary, because ultimately, this is how we’re going to win. And it seems like everything that’s being done now defies logic.”

Trump said he understands the idea that candidates like Sen. Marco Rubio, without a reasonable path to victory, might be hoping to pick off enough delegates to ensure a contested convention. But he said such a maneuver would be “so contrary to democracy” that it would ruin the party’s chances in November.

“That’s where it comes to the GOP to put the political pressure on him [Rubio] to say, ‘Listen, get out of the race and allow somebody to win,’” he said.

But Trump said 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s scathing attack on his father last week backfired. He downplayed the significance of Sen. Ted Cruz’s two caucus wins on Saturday, coupled with Donald Trump’s tighter-than-expected victories. He said the states that his father carried together have more than twice the population of the states Cruz won.

“I think tomorrow’s going to be a great day for us, and we feel very, very good about it,” he said of Tuesday’s primaries in Michigan, Mississippi, and Idaho. “And I really think it’s us after that.”

Trump said he gets frustrated by unfair attacks his father has been forced to endure, although he acknowledged that Trump has been quite aggressive, himself.

“He’s also an amazing guy,” the younger Trump said. “He’s an amazing dad. Everything he’s ever touched has turned to gold.”
