Mayor Bill de Blasio appeared to suggest on Monday that New York City’s sanctuary policies protecting illegal alien criminals somehow keep the city safe from terrorism.

De Blasio’s bizarre comments came in response to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement that state and local governments must certify that they are not sanctuary jurisdictions in order to receive grants from the Justice Department.

“We will remain a city welcoming of immigrants who have helped make our city the safest big city in the nation.”

“President Trump’s latest threat changes nothing. We will remain a city welcoming of immigrants who have helped make our city the safest big city in the nation,” de Blasio said in response to Sessions’ announcement.

De Blasio did not offer details to back up how harboring criminals in the nation illegally keeps the city safe.

The New York City mayor did, however, attempt to place preemptive blame on the Trump administration for any future terror attack that might occur in the city.

“Any attempt to cut NYPD funding for the nation’s top terror target will be aggressively fought in court,” said de Blasio. “We won’t back down from protecting New Yorkers from terror — or from an overzealous administration fixated on xenophobia and needless division.”

Sessions indicated Monday the Justice Department could withhold several grants, including the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, from localities that refuse to comply with federal immigration law.

“I urge the nation’s states and cities to carefully consider the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws,” Sessions said at the White House press briefing Monday. “Not only do these policies endanger lives of every American, but just last May, the Department of Justice inspector general found these policies also violate federal law.”
